The National Business Information System (NBIS) is based on tried and tested police principles:
- intelligence led
- targets and focuses on the most prolific criminals
- Proactive
- Combats organised town/shopping centre crime
- Cost implication is negligible on time and resources
The emphasis is on crime prevention/reduction and reducing the opportunity for crime to happen in the first place potentially allowing redeployment of resources. Currently, dealing with and processing shop thieves accounts for a very significant cost for the police.
On average, over 25% of any police force's crime takes place in town/city centres, and NBIS assists in identifying those criminals who travel between town/shopping centres, and links to other types of crime - e.g. drugs, burglary, robbery, car crime, cheque/credit card fraud.
NBIS provides additional information to enable the criminal justice system to more appropriately deal with persistent criminals:
- Police
- Probation Service
- Youth Offending Teams
- Drugs Rehabilitation Teams
- CPS/Courts
NBIS enables the business sector to work together - sharing and disseminating information and adopting an intelligence led approach to crime prevention and detection, whilst assisting the police in addressing the issues under the Crime and Disorder Act.
